I’ve had a few people say to me, “How can you be a Lenny Kravitz fan?  He’s so ‘worldly’!”  While I don’t blame you for judging (1 Cor. 5), here is my response to that question…  “It’s all about the music!”  Oh yeah, and be careful how you judge!  (Matt. 7)

While I don’t agree with the way that Lenny lives his life all the time, I do love his music.  It’s funny, because I’m sure that people say the same thing about me…  in fact I know that they do, that’s what led me to write this post.

It’s true that Lenny claims to be a Christian (see here) but it’s also true that his lifestyle doesn’t always confirm that claim.  In fact, I can honestly say that if he were in our Church (if only!) I’d do everything I could to help him move through some of those lifestyle issues…  uhh… that’s if he would even talk to me.  Another truth is that his music is not always God focused, but then again, much of the time it is.  In fact many of his songs carry some very heavy spiritual implications.

As a musician I know that music reflects the deep parts of the soul (uhhh… most of the time) and as I follow Lenny’s music, much of which is collaborated on by guitarist Craig Ross , I see the struggle that I believe goes on within the heart of every Christian.  The struggle to do good while living in this perverse world.  Lyrics like…

Too many distractions run through my brain
So many girls they start to look the same
Too many options no time to choose
Too many clothes, too many shoes

…from “I don’t want to be a star” truly echo Paul’s words, “I don’t understand what I am doing.  For I do not do what I want – instead, I do what I hate.” (Romans 7:15)  I don’t know if that’s the way that Lenny feels but his music sure reflects that thought.  But then again, who knows the heart of man?

What I do know is that his music touches my soul and continually points me toward God.  And that is why I am a Lenny fan….  it’s all about the music!  Here are some songs that I would encourage you to listen to…

Regardless of his shortcomings, I’m still a Lenny fan.  I hope that people can say the same about me.
